So let me take a wild guess, you want to start a blog and have no idea where to start?
Everywhere you see there are bloggers budding – beauty blogs, fashion blogs, lifestyle blogs, technology blogs, personal blogs, travel blogs etc. or a mishmash of all of these. And when you read their blogs, you have this deep desire to do the same.
YOU want to work for yourself. You want to earn money online while doing the stuff you love to do.
Let me assure that you are at the right place and the right time. This industry has a place for you!
I do not usually give blogging advice especially to start a blog. But today I decided to help out others. Since I had to learn every single step by myself (after making many mistakes), I thought of easing the way for you. Read on to find out how you can start your own blog!
There are 2 ways to start a blog:
- Start a FREE blog with a blogging service like Tumblr, WordPress or Blogger etc.
- Start your Own website.
If you go with the first option, it will not be your blog completely. You will have to abide by the rules and regulations given by the company or they can lock or delete your blog (sometimes without any prior warning). There are plenty of things you cannot do when you run a FREE blog.
So if you are serious and want to make money from blogging then invest a little bit into your website. You will have 100% control over it that way. You will not be sorry.
I started blogging on WordPress but moved to my own domain within 15 days so I say why waste time, just get started with your own website. Here are a few simple steps to help you set up your own website or blog.
4 Simple Steps to Set up your Own Blog!
Buy Domain Name => Buy Domain Hosting => Install Blogging Software => Choose a Theme
[bctt tweet=”4 simple steps to start a blog and become a professional blogger!”]
Step 1: Find a Nameplate for your blog. (Domain Name)
Buy Domain Name from Bluehost (just click on the green button!) It take only a few minutes to get this done. Once you buy domain name, you can move to the next step!
I was a shopaholic at the time I bought this domain (I haven’t changed much) so I kept the word “Shopping” in my domain name. And since I buy (shop) stuff that I review on the blog, everything that happens on the Shopping Escapades – Makeup and Beauty Blog India is a result of the various Shopping Escapades (duh?) of mine. But I digress.
There are plenty of websites selling domain names (including most domain hosting websites). I have bought domains from other websites in the past and wasted time in transferring them to my hosting service company. So I say buy it from a trusted hosting service like BlueHost. They run offers like, one FREE Domain for Domain hosting service at $ 5.95 a month (doesn’t get any better than this).
Step 2. Rent a place for your Domain (Buy Domain Hosting)
Buy Domain Hosting for just $ 3.95 a month (~ 400 INR) by entering the required information (it only takes a few minutes). Half the work is done. Congratulations!
A domain name is nothing if it has no place (online) to refer to. Essentially Domain Hosting is like a rented apartment where your content lives in the online world. This is one of the deciding factors in your experience with running a website.
If you go for cheap hosting, you might face downtime, higher loading time or server unavailability issues etc. So leave it to the experts. I have personally used Bluehost and Hostgator for my websites. Both of these blog hosting companies have impeccable service. I have tried a few other lesser known hosting services but I would highly recommend Bluehost. All you need is to click on the Get Started Now green button and fill in your details and you are just two steps away from being a professional blogger!
Once you complete the process, you will get all your details including the Username and Password for your Control Panel. Save this information!
Step 3: Set up with a Blog Software (Install a Blogging Platform)
Enter the UserId and password you received from Step2 to login to your Control panel. Install WordPress! Bluehost offers a 1-Click WordPress Install which is as simple as it can get!
I have used both Blogger and WordPress, in their different avatars in the past (I have also used Tumblr) and in my opinion, WordPress stands out the most to me in terms of features, themes, styles etc. All of my websites, including this one, works on the WordPress platform. And I believe in it. WordPress is easy to install from your Control Panel. They have nice FREE themes and amazing paid themes too.
I used to run a blog on Blogger (run by Google), it was very easy to use but had limited features. Go for any service you like, I think Blogger and WordPress are like Apples and Oranges, you cannot compare them. As I mentioned above, I recommend WordPress.
Step 4: Dress Up to Face the World (Buy/Choose/Install a Blog theme)
Once WordPress is installed on your website, you will be able to access your blog through a link like: http://yourdomain.com/wp-admin
Login with your WordPress Username and Password. Choose any theme and your work is done. You are now a professional blogger!
Makeup is really important to me. It makes me feel good and in many ways present the best version of me to the world. Same is the case with Blog Themes. They help show your content to the world in a beautiful way. I use a mix of free and paid themes for my various blogs. I am currently playing with different themes and cannot recommend one particular theme. But my advice would be, go for a simple theme. It should be easy to read, responsive (so it can show the content in the best way possible according to the device it is being viewed from), clean and match your brand.
So there you go! I wish you all the very best and hope that all of your blogging dreams come true! Go to my blog – Shopping Escapades – homepage!
